Speed limits will be officially lowered in early December on two state highways north of Paeroa township in the Hauraki District.
The current 70km/h speed limits on State Highway 2 Puke Road and State Highway 26 Thames Road will be lowered to 50 km/h. Approximately 870 metres of the current 100kmh section of State Highway 26 Thames Road will also be lowered to 80km/h, north of Alpha Street intersection.
NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) State Highway Manager Kaye Clark says the changes have been prompted by a recent review of the speed limits and how they relate to the urban growth that has taken place in the Paeroa area, over the past few years.
Mrs Clark says, “NZTA is in the process of reviewing the state highway speed limits in several areas around the Coromandel Peninsula where recent development has expanded the built up areas. Lowered speed limits are more appropriate for these urban environments and are consistent with the NZTA’s standard approach to setting speed limits within built up areas.”
Speed limits on SH25 around Coromandel township were lowered in early November and at least two other areas are being looked at.
The lower speed limits in Paeroa will come into effect as soon as the new speed limit signs are erected.
