The first phase of a series of improvements along State Highway 1 Greenwood Street and Kahikatea Drive in Hamilton city is now underway.
The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) started upgrading the Greenwood Street/Killarney Road intersection on 1 December. Service relocation work is being carried out first and reconstruction of the intersection is programmed to begin in early February. The upgrade involves the removal of the existing roundabout, the installation of traffic signals, construction of additional traffic lanes on all four legs of the intersection, and provision of improved pedestrian/cyclist facilities.
NZTA Regional Manager Kaye Clark says the upgrade of the Greenwood Street/Killarney Road intersection will improve its traffic capacity and provide much better access for pedestrians and cyclists.
Mrs Clark says, “Capacity and safety improvements along SH1 Greenwood Street and Kahikatea Drive are an important component of the planned upgrade of the SH1 western corridor through Hamilton, which includes the recently completed SH1 Avalon Drive Bypass project. The start of work on the Greenwood Street/Killarney Road intersection will be followed in 2009 by the upgrade of the Kahikatea Drive/Lorne Street/Ohaupo Road signalised intersection to improve its capacity, and the construction of new bus bays and pedestrian crossings on Kahikatea Drive.”
NZTA will be producing regular email project updates on these two intersection upgrades. The updates will advise motorists, nearby businesses and residents about project progress and any upcoming temporary traffic controls and detours.
