Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises that contractors will be undertaking essential maintenance activities across the Manawatū-Whanganui region over the coming weeks.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Ross I’Anson says these essential works allow Waka Kotahi’s contractors to ensure the roads remain safe for all road users.
“Safely maintaining New Zealand’s state highway network is considered vital at this time in order to ensure that critical functions to limit the spread of COVID-19 can continue.”
The maintenance work includes repairing edge marker posts, filling pot holes and maintaining the road shoulder across the Manawatū-Whanganui state highway network over the next few weeks.
Water cutting will be underway on State Highway 1 Bulls to Sanson as well as State Highway 3 Mt Stewart to Dudding Lake. Water cutting involves using high pressure water to remove excess binder from the road surface to restore surface texture.
Contractors will also be doing maintenance work on signs along State Highway 1 Taihape to Hunterville.
Mr I’Anson asks people to be patient and considerate to roadworkers and look out for their safety and wellbeing.
“If you see contractors on the roads during the shutdown period, please remember that they are undertaking essential work to keep us all safe.
“If you are using the roads during this period please comply with any temporary speed restrictions through roadworks to keep workers safe. They are doing vital work and deserve our gratitude.
“People must only head out for essential supplies or services, otherwise, please stay safe and stay home.
“If you must drive to access essential supplies or services please take care, drive to the conditions and adhere to the speed limits.”
