Bridge strengthening work on the Kawarau River Bridge adjacent to the AJ Hackett Bungy Bridge on State Highway 6 near Queenstown has been finished about 10 days ahead of schedule.
The NZ Transport Agency project that required a 24 hour single lane restriction on the bridge was completed late yesterday afternoon.
Project Manager John Jarvis is pleased this work could be completed sooner than expected as it reduces the amount of disruption for bridge users. The earlier finish was made possible by the excellent work of the contractors involved. The project costing approximately $400,000 involved welding large steel plates into the bridge structure to provide additional support for growing traffic volumes. It will also help avoid the need for large vehicle weight restrictions on the bridge in the future.
There will be some minor traffic disruptions over the next couple of months as finishing work and load testing on the bridge is carried out. The current restrictions on large overweight vehicles will remain until the testing is completed.
NZTA would like to thank the public and the local community for their patience over this period to enable us to undertake this essential bridge strengthening work.
