Work to reinforce the concrete walls above the entrances to the Mt Victoria Tunnel (known as portals) is coming to an end.
For the past few months, the NZ Transport Agency has been putting in new rock anchors to support the portals, as well as installing new beams to strengthen them at either end.
Transport Agency Highway Wellington Manager Rod James says that this earthquake strengthening work is another important step in keeping the tunnel operating effectively and keeping people using the tunnel safe
"The Mt Victoria Tunnel is a vital part of Wellington's transport network, both for the city and the wider region. Last year, we completed the removal of old ceiling panels, installed new monitoring cameras and new fire safety equipment, including a high capacity water deluge system and heat detection system. Strengthening the portals was the next step, and we're pleased with the results."
Mr James says that the final steps in this work include testing the rock anchors, painting both portals and planting at the Basin Reserve end. Scaffolding will also have to be taken down, and this means the tunnel will be closed 10pm – 6am Tuesday 13 August to Thursday 15 August. The Mt Victoria tunnel will return to regular operations from 6am on Friday 16 August.
Mr James also thanked the public for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out.
"The Mt Victoria Tunnel is a busy route, and we have done our best to do this work with as little disruption as possible," says Mr James. "But roadworks will almost always cause some inconvenience, and we thank everyone for their consideration and support throughout this project."
A signposted detour through Newtown via Constable St will be in place while the tunnel is closed.
The Mt Victoria tunnel also has a live webcam installed inside. You can view it at this link: http://www.citylink.co.nz/citylink-experience/webcams/mount-victoria-tunnel(external link)
