Extra care will be needed on state highways at the top of the South and lower North Island with another round of bad weather forecast for both regions tomorrow.
The Metservice has issued a strong wind watch for Wellington, Wairarapa, and Marlborough for 14 hours from midnight tonight (Monday). Northwest winds may approach severe gales in exposed places.
It means motorcyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles (eg trucks, campervans) will need to exercise caution on exposed routes such as State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1, Transmission Gully.
Meanwhile, at the top of the South Island, heavy rain warnings and watches are in place for most of Tuesday. Drivers must be alert for road hazards, as strong winds and heavy rain can cause slips, treefalls and localised flooding.
The bad weather will coincide with peak morning traffic times for the main urban centres. Commuters should take extra care on their way to work and drive to the conditions.
Road users should check weather and road conditions before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys.
