A serious crash has closed State Highway 1 south of Foxton near the Whirokino Bridge.
Emergency services are at the scene.
The fatal crash means that the road will be closed in both directions until further notice.
Detours are in place.
The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to use SH57 and divert through Shannon and Foxton to resume travel on SH 1.
