The Ashburton District Council will this Thursday (April 9) consider the Tinwald Corridor Study Draft Programme Business Case to address access and safety issues along State Highway 1 through Tinwald.
Endorsement of the Draft Programme Business Case, prepared during the last year working closely with community representatives, will see the Council and NZ Transport Agency in partnership begin the next investigation phase of improvements along the state highway.
The Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Colin Knaggs says the first stage of the programme is to develop a range of intersection improvements, which will include a left-turn slip lane from Lagmhor Road and right-turn merge lanes at Wilkin Street.
“We will also investigate the construction of a roundabout at Graham Street and SH1, with the aim of putting it forward for funding and construction as part of the 2018-21 National Land Transport Programme.”
He says the Transport Agency with the Council will also complete an investigation to look at how best to improve access and safety for cyclists and pedestrians in Tinwald.
The Transport Agency has worked with Ashburton District Council councillors and staff, local business representatives, a local developer, cycle advocate, school principals and resident associations to identify the safety and access issues and develop the Draft Programme Business Case.
“While the installation of traffic signals in Tinwald were considered as an option at several possible locations by the working party, it was agreed there were better alternative solutions that would improve safety and access and keep traffic moving better overall,” Mr Knaggs says.
