The NZ Transport Agency has awarded the contract for the new, two-lane Motu Bridge on State Highway 2, northwest of Gisborne, to Fulton Hogan East Coast.
The contract, valued at $6.5 million, is for improving the roads leading up to the bridge, and the construction of a two-lane bridge. The bridge was designed by Hamilton-based company Bloxam, Burnett & Olliver (BBO).
Funding for the new bridge comes from the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Programme, announced by Prime Minister John Key in January 2016.
"A new two-lane bridge will help make this route safer, more reliable and resilient,” Wayne Oldfield, Highway Manager, NZ Transport Agency says.
Motorists will notice temporary traffic management from early October as establishment and preparatory work gets underway, with construction due to start before the end of the year.
The new bridge is expected to take around 12 months to construct, with the whole project, including the removal of the old bridge, expected to be complete by early 2018.
