An information day will be held this Friday 13 December 2013 to give the community and the wider public an opportunity to provide comment on the proposed plan to upgrade the current Highway 2 (SH2) and State Highway 25 (SH25) intersection, north of Mangatarata, to a roundabout.
The Transport Agency’s Principal Safety Engineer, Michelle Te Wharau, says a roundabout has been identified as the preferred and more forgiving form of intersection and work is currently under way to identify the most effective and efficient design.
"The current layout of the T-intersection is now unsuitable given the large volume of traffic from the Coromandel that turns right from SH25 into SH2 towards Auckland, particularly during peak holiday periods” Mrs Te Wharau says.
The first stage of the investigation is complete and the public is invited to meet with the consultants and NZ Transport Agency staff, to view and discuss plans and provide comment/feedback on what is proposed. This will happen at the Corner Stone Cafe on SH25 near the intersection, this Friday 13 December 2013 from 12 noon to 4pm.
The Transport Agency has engaged Bloxam Burnett and Olliver (BBO) to conduct the investigation and design stages of this project. Public queries about the upgrade should be directed to Ben Inger on 0800 226 583.
This approach is a key part of the Government’s Safer Journeys Strategy, which aims to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes on our roads.
