Brighter future for Lyttelton Tunnel

Work on installing new improved lighting in the Lyttelton Tunnel will be completed by the end of this month.

Work on installing new improved lighting in the Lyttelton Tunnel will be completed by the end of this month.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) expects the work to cause few delays for tunnel users. A contract for the new lighting was awarded earlier this year.

NZTA Canterbury State Highways Manager Colin Knaggs says the installation work should only take two weeks. This lighting will complete the centre of the tunnel.  Additional lighting for the short sections at either end of the tunnel will be operating from early next month.

“Over 100 escape guidance lights similar to aircraft escape lighting are being installed as part of an ongoing safety upgrade of the Tunnel. The NZ designed and manufactured lights are strong enough to withstand the rigors of tunnel life including high pressure washing of the walls. The escape lights are triggered by the tunnel operator who manages the 37 video cameras mounted in the tunnel”.

Mr Knaggs says the emergency lighting only lights the side of the tunnel where there is an incident with guiding lights showing people the direction they need to go to safely exit the tunnel.
