Another stretch of cyclone-affected SH38 between Wairoa and Lake Waikaremoana will reopen tomorrow (Friday 24 March).
Roading contractors working on SH38 have now completed clearing slips on the final stretch between Tuai and Aniwaniwa Falls.
That stretch of road will now open to general public from 7am.
The road has been open from Wairoa to Tuai since the middle of this month and work has continued on installing safety barriers and slip clearing.
SH38 was significantly impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. The special purpose road that continues towards Bay of Plenty from Aniwaniwa Falls needs further repairs before it can be opened.
Contractors are continuing to work in the area.
“While this will mean the state highway is completely open to Aniwaniwa Falls, there will be temporary traffic management in parts, so we’re urging road users to be prepared for those restrictions and drive to the conditions,” says Waka Kotahi Central North Island Regional Manager of Maintenance and Operations, Jaclyn Hankin.
“Restoring this access right through to the falls has been a top priority for us and we’re really pleased to be able to reconnect communities with this reopening. We want to thank communities who’ve been impacted and have patiently waited for this news, and our contractors who’ve worked hard to get us to this point.”
