NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has approved an increase in the speed limit on the Kāpiti Expressway to 110km/h.
The new speed limit of 110km/h will apply to 24.5 km of the state highway, from north of Poplar Avenue/Raumati interchange to south of the Ōtaki northern interchange.
The new speed limit is expected to be implemented by the end of November 2024. Until the speed limit changes, the maximum speed you can travel on the Kāpiti Expressway is 100km/h.
The Kāpiti Expressway is an important part of our transport network, providing a crucial inter-regional connection while also reducing congestion and improving travel times for people and freight. It comprises the Mackays to Peka Peka and Peka Peka to Ōtaki Roads of National Significance.
The speed limit increase has been certified by the Director of Land Transport.
It follows a public consultation with partners, stakeholders and the community earlier this year.
3,313 submissions were received from across the lower North Island, including 48 submissions from organisations.
91% of submissions supported the proposed speed limit increase, with 91% strongly supporting it. Seven percent did not support the proposed increase.
