New urban connectors speed reviews proposing to keep lower speeds

NZTA has opened new speed reviews on several sections of state highway that are categorised as urban connectors, after community feedback that people would like to keep lower speeds in these locations. Under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 (the Rule), these sections are required to automatically reverse to their previous higher speed limit by 1 July 2025. These new speed reviews are proposing to change back to the lower speeds just after 1 July 2025.

Silverdale Bus Priority Lane Bylaw

NZTA is proposing a new bus priority lane on State Highway 1 Silverdale (northbound), north of Auckland, to improve travel times and reliability for bus users. The new lane will serve as a wider emergency stopping lane and operate as a bus priority lane from 3pm–7pm, Monday to Friday. This requires an amendment to the Traffic Controls on State Highways Bylaw 2017-14.

Proposed geotechnical amendments to the Bridge Manual

We’re making amendments to the geotechnical sections of the NZTA Bridge Manual. The aim is to keep the geotechnical standards up to date and provide clarification to the design standards. The amendments are mostly on chapter 6: Site stability, foundations, earthworks and retaining walls. At this stage we only sought feedback from the geotechnical community (NZGS).

Vehicle Standards Compliance Amendment 2025 Consultation

The Minister of Transport is proposing changes to the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Standards Compliance 2002 (the Rule) and we’d like to know what you think about them. The changes would reduce the frequency of warrant of fitness (WoF) checks on vintage and veteran vehicles and certificate of fitness checks (CoF) on privately owned heavy motorhomes.

Enhancing value for money through public transport procurement​

​The purpose of the update is to achieve better value for money and long-term cost effectiveness. ​

Evans Street, Timaru proposed no-stopping (no-parking) restrictions

NZTA wants to improve traffic flow on SH1 Evans Street by expanding it to two lanes in each direction. While we are replacing the road surface between Te Weka Street and Wai-Iti Road, we are proposing to remove parking on the road shoulder, by extending no-stopping restrictions. This will allow room for these additional lanes in this area.

Regional consultation under the new speed rule

Under the new Speed Setting of Speed Limits Rule, NZTA consulted on some sections of state highway to see if there is support in retaining current speed limits. We sought feedback from local road users and communities for a range of ‘interregional and rural connectors’ in several regions around the country.

Class exemption for electric trucks

The Director of Land Transport is proposing a class exemption that will allow drivers with a class 1 driver licence to drive electric trucks weighing 6000-7,500kg.
