00:10:04 | Interview - Fabian Marsh, Road Safety Manager Waka Kotahi | Raised safety platforms are a key measure under New Zealand's Road to Zero strategy to improve |
00:15:04 | Interview - Fabian Marsh, Road Safety Manager Waka Kotahi | the safety of our roads. Road to Zero adopts a vision where no one is killed or seriously |
00:19:09 | Cars travelling through intersection using raised safety platform | injured on our roads and to do that we'll need to create a safe system. |
00:24:06 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | So this intersection I guess has just got progressively busy over the years. It used to be a rural intersection, |
00:30:01 | Flyover shot of Thomas and Gordonton Road intersection | had high speeds, was 100km/h environment and as the city's moved north we've just got more |
00:35:03 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | and more traffic coming out of this intersection. So we did a few things like putting in some more |
00:40:03 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | islands and really just trying to fine and make the intersection more conspicuous. |
00:44:06 | Time lapse of intersection | We lowered the speed limit on Gordonton Road down to 80km/h, we installed some more cycle facilities, |
00:50:03 | Cars travelling through intersection | just really trying to define the intersection and the movement and we actually even went to |
00:55:05 | Person standing watching cars through intersection | the stage of having a variable speed limit at the intersection which worked really well but |
00:01:01 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | still wasn't quite getting us those safety improvements that we needed because people |
01:06:01 | Flyover shot of cars turning at intersection | were still having to take those risks for?turning right out of that intersection. |
01:10:06 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | Hamilton City is a Vision Zero city so the?challenge we had was finding something that would |
01:15:01 | Three people watching cars travel through intersection | work with the traffic signals and that's when we?reached out to Waka Kotahi to see what they could |
01:20:00 | Three people chatting | bring to the table, overseas experience and that?sort of thing and really looking to do something |
01:25:06 | Close up of face | that was new and innovative and Hamilton City is certainly into that but something that we were |
01:31:00 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | confident was still going to get those really good results because you can't muck around with safety |
01:36:04 | Time lapse of intersection | you have to get it right. It's really important to note that raised safety platforms such as these |
01:41:06 | Truck and trailer travelling over platform | aren't the same as your typical speed humps that you'd see outside of schools or in city centres |
01:46:08 | Truck and trailer travelling over platform | these are specifically designed for Safe System outcomes to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists |
01:52:02 | Vehicles travelling over platform | aren't subjected to impacts with vehicles that are traveling above 30 kilometres an hour or in |
01:56:09 | SUV right turning | in this particular case the primary risk is around those side impacts and we want to prevent people |
02:01:00 | Truck travelling through intersection | from being subjected to crashes where vehicles are traveling above 50 kilometres an hour |
02:04:06 | Car approaching intersection | and this intersection does that really well you can see on the approaches when you're about 100 |
02:09:00 | Slow mo ute travelling over platform | to 200 metres before the intersection speeds are still traveling at around 60 70 kilometers an hour |
02:14:05 | Interview - Fabian Marsh, Road Safety Manager Waka Kotahi | but by the time vehicles get to the intersection where the conflict is those speeds have dropped |
02:18:06 | Interview - Fabian Marsh, Road Safety Manager Waka Kotahi | to around 40 to 50 kilometres an hour. So in terms of that Safe System risk we can see that these |
02:23:00 | Interview - Fabian Marsh, Road Safety Manager Waka Kotahi | platforms have been really effective at preventing people from being subjected if a crash happens |
02:27:05 | Cars travelling over platforms | from those serious injury forces. So we were really short of time for this because we did have crashes. |
02:33:08 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | We bought our consultants on board and we also brought our contractor on board to work together |
02:39:07 | Large truck travelling over platform | to make sure that we were getting a seamless delivery. This particular site had had quite |
02:45:03 | Large truck travelling over platform | high crossfall on the main road and then we were concerned about whether we were actually going to |
02:49:07 | Close up of truck travelling over platform | create problems with trucks rolling over when they did turning movements over so we did a whole lot |
02:54:04 | Person standing watching cars through intersection | of analysis around that and made sure that we've got it really right before we went out and started |
02:59:08 | Flyover shot of cars turning at intersection | digging in the ground. What's different about this application this is the first time in New Zealand |
03:04:02 | Close up of car wheels going across platform | where we're using raised safety platforms on a higher speed road. This measure was a pioneered |
03:09:04 | Interview - Fabian Marsh, Road Safety Manager Waka Kotahi | in Netherlands and has been used throughout Australia and these applications can be used |
03:14:00 | Time lapse flyover shot of intersection | in higher speed urban arterial roads as well as peri-urban and rural roads that you see behind me |
03:20:00 | Flyover shot of cars turning at intersection | It's been that great we're actually using road safety platforms and a lot of other |
03:24:05 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | locations around the city. We're using them to upgrade our zebra crossings outside schools |
03:29:08 | Interview - Robyn Denton, Network Operations and Use Leader, Hamilton City Council | we're putting them at signalized pedestrian crossings,we've put them in at other signalized intersections |
03:34:08 | Flyover shot of intersection | around the city they are really making a huge difference to the safety around this city |
