Automated and autonomous vehicles

Vehicles are coming to market with ever-increasing levels of automation and in the future truly autonomous vehicles will be market ready. The distinction between automated and autonomous vehicles is that whereas automated vehicles require a driver to be present to resume the driving task under certain conditions, an autonomous vehicle can cope with uncertain situations and a driver is not required.

If you are interested in testing automated or autonomous vehicles in New Zealand the Ministry of Transport website has policy information to help guide you in your overall approach.
