Summer marketing

This summer we’re reminding people to make safe driving choices when travelling throughout the country, as well as reminding them about our maintenance programme on the state highway network.

Key messages

  • Drive sober and rested.
  • If you plan on drinking or taking drugs – plan not to drive. Use public transport, call for a ride, or stay with friends or family.
  • Make sure you’re well rested and alert before you head off.
  • Include rest breaks every couple of hours and share the driving.
  • Seatbelts save lives. Buckle up for every drive.
  • Put your phone away when driving.
  • Travel at a safe speed whenever you drive. This means following the speed limit and adjusting your speed to the road, traffic or weather conditions.
  • This summer roadworkers are out across the country making improvements. Expect delays and allow extra time before you travel.
  • Road workers are out in all weather and do their best to keep everyone moving. Be tolerant and respectful of all crew members and follow any instructions on site. They’re helping to keep you safe.

Roadworks campaign

To keep our roads safe and accessible, we undertake an annual programme of resurfacing and rebuilding across the state highway network each summer. We use summer to resurface and rebuild roads as the weather is warm and dry, which helps ensure good quality and longer-lasting roads.

We’re reminding people of the important maintenance work on the state highways during the summer, so they can expect and plan for roadworks. We’re also asking them to drive safely through roadworks, including respecting roadworkers when they’re driving through worksites.

We’re running a social media campaign throughout the maintenance season across NZTA Facebook pages throughout 16–20 December and 7 January–8 February.
