Springs Road and Marshs Road intersection in Prebbleton has undergone a major transformation to improve safety in Selwyn.
The intersection was previously an uncontrolled rural intersection on a straight Canterbury-style road that had high traffic volumes using the road every day. On average there are 18,200 vehicles per day using Springs Road and 3,400 on Marshs Road.
With the second stage of the Christchurch Southern Motorway complete, the road environment was rapidly changing with lots of urban growth also starting in the area.
To improve safety at this intersection Waka Kotahi and Selwyn District Council partnered together to deliver a dual lane rural roundabout.
There have been one serious, two minor and two non-injury crashes at the intersection over a five year period to 2018, resulting in 1 DSI (death and serious injury). The roundabout will reduce DSIs by 60% when complete as part of a safe system treatment.
The $5 million-dollar safe system upgrade is due for completion soon.
