Stratford District Council made significant changes on a previously dangerous road, improving the safety for everyone travelling by installing side barriers and advance warning signs as well as reducing the speed limit.
Since the speed limit changed from 100km/h to 80km/h on Opunake Road in June 2022 as well as the installation of the barriers and signs—there have been no recorded crashes.
Monitoring of the road both before and after the speed limit change showed that one week prior to the change, the average speed was in excess of 120km/h—whereas following the change average speeds were down to 85km/h.
