As part of the Matamata-Piako District Council’s Innovating Streets project the council trialled Hetana Street as a one-way street as well as other safety improvements such as installing pedestrian crossings and widened curbing to slow down traffic, making it safer for people walking and cycling in the area.
Following the trial and considering feedback from the community Hetana Street was returned to two-way traffic. Due to positive feedback around the safety improvements for pedestrians Matamata-Piako District Council installed three raised safety platforms along the length of the street to manage vehicle speed.
