We consulted in several regions around the country between 30 January and 13 March 2025 to find out local support levels for keeping speed limits at specific state highway locations at today’s lowered speeds.
NZTA is required to reverse these locations’ speed limit to their previous speeds by 1 July 2025, unless there is public support to retain them.
We consulted on 2 interregional state highways in the Waikato region. You can read more about these locations in our info sheet or refer to the list below.

The area sees considerable year-round traffic and a significant increase during the summer to lakeside campgrounds and settlements, where people have to cross SH1 to get to the lake. | 80km/h | 100km/h |
SH1 Halletts Bay to Motuere/Bulli Point South of Rereahu Avenue, Hātepe to south of Waitapu Road, Motutere |
From south of Rereahu Avenue, Hātepe to south of Waitapu Road, Motutere there are numerous roadside hazards compounded by winding sections and steep drop offs – particularly Bulli Point - Motutere. The area sees considerable year-round traffic and a significant increase during the summer to lakeside campgrounds and settlements which are often on the other side of SH1 to Lake Taupō. | 60km/h | 100km/h |

SH1 Motuoapa to Tūrangi South of Parekarangaranga St, Motuoapa to south of Waiotaka Rd, Tūrangi. |
The area from south of Parekarangaranga Street, Motuoapa to south of Waiotaka Road, Tūrangi sees considerable year-round traffic with significant increases during the summer due to the lakeside campgrounds and settlements.
