We want to keep our workers and everyone using Aotearoa New Zealand’s streets and roads safe. Roadworks areas can have safety risks for road workers and users. One of the biggest risks is people speeding through roadworks areas.

In 2023 we conducted an initial trial to see if safety cameras on trailers are safe and effective to use at roadworks and construction sites. We put equipment at the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway to see how it performed. We also wanted to see if safety cameras protect road workers and users by encouraging people to travel at the correct speed through these areas.

We expect the next stage will be testing safety cameras at active roadworks sites and we’ll update this page with more information about our trials before we get underway.

We won’t be identifying or taking action on offences during any trials. We’ll review the trial results and use them to support our future decisions.
