How we confirm a safety camera offence

We thoroughly review information captured by safety cameras. If we confirm speeding or red light running has happened, we issue a safety camera notice.

Information our safety cameras collect

Our spot speed, average speed, and red light safety cameras collect a range of information about the potential offence including:

  • vehicle speed
  • average speed (average speed safety cameras only)
  • date, time, place of the event
  • digital images of the vehicle and people inside it*
  • video (red light cameras only)
  • direction
  • lane
  • vehicle type

*Photos may or may not show people inside the vehicle. It depends on things like the camera angle and travel direction.

Our review process

When we receive camera information, we complete a thorough review process.

Step 1. Review

We review information about the potential offence to confirm the vehicle is clearly identifiable. If the vehicle isn’t clearly identifiable, we will not issue a safety camera notice.

We confirm the camera equipment is accurate, and the speed limit included in the camera information is correct.

Step 2. Identifying the registered person responsible for the vehicle

We use the plate number to identify the registered person responsible for the vehicle at the time of the infringement, as recorded in the Motor Vehicle Register.

Step 3. Second review

We check again that the information we’ve received is accurate and complete. When an infringement has happened, our system calculates a fee based on excess speed.

Step 4. We issue a safety camera notice

We create and post a safety camera notice to the registered person responsible for the vehicle.
