A lane line is defined as a line marked on a road which separates a lane for the traffic travelling in the same direction (be it for vehicles, special classes of vehicles such as cycles). Lane lines are only used on roads that have more than one lane of traffic travelling in the same direction and should not be used as a centre-line to separate traffic traveling in the opposite direction.

Lane lines separating through traffic on multi-lane roads should be marked as shown in Table 2‑43.
In addition to lane line marking on multi-lane roads, raised pavement markers can be used.
