Sight rails are not traffic control devices; however, they are sometimes used as a form of delineation at curves or intersections. Sight rails are not barriers and are not intended to stop errant vehicles.

Conventional delineation devices (signs, edge marker posts, road marking) should be used in preference to sight rails, however, sight rails may be considered to enhance delineation.

Further information on sight rails is provided in Specification C20: erection and maintenance of traffic signs, chevrons, markers and sight rails.
