Advisory curve warning signs should be located where approaching drivers have an uninterrupted view of them over a distance of at least 120m in rural areas and at least 60m in urban areas and be in advance of each curve by at least the distance specified in Table 3‑5.
Table 3‑5: Location of advisory curve warning and speed advisory supplementary signs
Speed difference between 85th percentile approach speed to the curve (V85) and the curve advisory speed (VS) (km/h) | Minimum distance of sign in advance of curve tangent point (m) |
---|---|
20 | 100 |
30 | 120 |
40 | 130 |
50 | 140 |
60 | 150 |
70 | 160 |
80 | 170 |
It is important when placing a sign that it does not obscure any other signs, obstruct sightlines from a side road or major access, and / or misguide any road users.
In situations where a curve advisory speed is signed it is important to ensure that the curve advisory speed is not higher than the posted speed limit.
