Red flashing traffic signals may be used at fire stations, airfield runways and other locations where traffic may be required to stop for special occurrences.

Clause 6.5(13 and 14) of the TCD rule specifies that:

(1)   Signals for controlling traffic in special situations or at emergency vehicle access points must comprise:

(a)   two red disc signals mounted horizontally or vertically; or

(b)   two red disc signals mounted horizontally and placed immediately above a yellow disc signal.

(2)   The signals in 6.5(13)(b) must operate in the following sequence:

(a)   a steady yellow disc signal that must be displayed for at least three seconds and for no longer than six seconds;

(b)   two red disc signals that must flash alternately and, after the minimum time consistent with safe operation, a blank display.

Wherever the road surface permits, it is desirable to provide markings on the approaches to red flashing traffic signals as specified in the road markings section.
