From October 2024 to March 2025, we are undertaking road rebuilds at 5 different sites on State Highway 3 (SH3) between Nukumaru and Patea. The 5 sites are:

  • SH3 Moumahaki (between Waiau and Okotuku roads)
  • SH3 Nukumaru (north of Pakaraka Road)
  • SH3 Waitōtara No. 1 (south of Jackson Road)
  • SH3 Waitōtara No. 2 (south of Waitōtara River bridge)
  • SH3 Whenuakura (south of Oreilly Road)

We will start work on SH3 Waitōtara No. 1 and SH3 Whenuakura on Tuesday October 29. The rebuilds at the remaining 3 sites will start in the new year.

Rebuilding the road is important to maintain its reliability and longevity.

We are also undertaking reseals in various locations along this section of SH3 this maintenance season. These minor works will take 1-2 days to complete and involve delays of no more than 5 minutes. The team onsite will speak with you if access to your property is impacted by these works.

This work forms part of the government’s $2.07 billion investment into road and drainage renewal and maintenance across 2024-27 via the State Highway Pothole Prevention fund.

Traffic management

Rebuilds started on SH3 Waitōtara No. 1 and SH3 Whenuakura on Tuesday October 29 and will be completed in December 2024.

From 6 November until the end of the month, we will undertake work on State Highway 3 (SH3) Nukumaru (north of Pakaraka Road) in preparation for the rebuild that will start there in January 2025. This will involve completing work in the road shoulder. This needs to take place prior to the rebuild starting.

At all 3 sites, work will be completed under stop/go traffic management with a temporary speed limit in place. Delays of up to 10 minutes are possible at each site, however traffic will be carefully managed to keep delays to a minimum.

The sites will be open to 2 lanes of traffic during the night and on weekends.

It is important to follow the temporary traffic management in place and adhere to all speed restrictions in place for the safety of road users and crews alike.

Speeding over a freshly sealed road can damage the new seal, lifting and flicking stones from the road that can, in turn, damage nearby vehicles or your own.

To minimise the risk of damage to both vehicles and the new seal, it is crucial that road users adhere to all temporary speed restrictions in place.

We appreciate your patience while we complete this necessary work.
