How to get your heavy vehicle driver licence

To gain a heavy vehicle licence (classes 2–5) you need to pass two stages:

  • learner licence
  • full licence.

This section outlines each stage of the four heavy vehicle driver licence classes.

Stage 1 - learner licence

Before you can apply for a heavy vehicle learner licence, you must first hold another class of licence for the required length of time.

Stage 2 - full licence

You can apply for your class 2–5 full licence once you’ve gained the corresponding class of learner licence and: have held it for at least 6 months, or
have successfully completed an approved heavy vehicle driving course.
