This specification details Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s requirements for the design, construction and maintenance of cycling and shared path facilities on the state highway network. This specification does not currently apply to footpaths but work is underway to better understand the design, construction and maintenance requirements for footpaths.
While targeted at cycling and shared path facilities on the state highway network, this specification may be adapted by other road controlling authorities for their own use.
The specification is supported by notes providing additional advice on the specification, a visual audit guideline, and a map of the identified State Highway Cycle Network Facilities on which the specification applies.
The map of state highway cycle network facilities is available to internal Waka Kotahi staff on Te Paparanga Āmiki within the cycling and walking map. If requested, Waka Kotahi can provide PDF copies of this map for external use. Contact: multimodal@nzta.govt.nz
This specification will be introduced through new network outcome contracts (NOC) as they are implemented and through the annual planning process.
