After a period of decline, there are data to show that the number of Deaths and Serious Injuries (DSIs) having driver alcohol/drugs as a factor has been fluctuating during the last three years. However, there is a possibility that some of the observed increases and decreases are attributable to changes in the way that data is collected and analysed. There is a need to look in depth at the state of the data, to get more insight into what may really be happening.
Fluctuations between 2017 to 2020 in the proportion of reported serious road trauma in the Crash Analysis System (CAS) where alcohol is identified as a crash-cause factor could be, in part, due to inaccuracies in how this alcohol-related data is coded. Several recommendations are made to improve the collection and reporting of alcohol-related crash and enforcement data.
