Published: | Category: Activity management , Research programme , Research & reports | Audience: General

This report summarises the results of several road trials carried out in New Zealand, over 15 years between 1989 and 1998, to investigate the hardening of bitumen in chipseals.

Such hardening is expected to limit the potential lifetimes of the chipseals.

Suggestions are made for further research to develop ways to select bitumens to minimise types of seal distress associated with bitumen aging.

Keywords: aging, bitumen, chipseal, durability, field trial, hardening, New Zealand, pavements, rheology, roads, surfacing
