This position paper sets out NZTA’s views on the use of driver simulation technology for training learner/novice drivers, following a review of New Zealand and international research on the topic.
In summary, NZTA’s position is that there is no substitute for on-road training and that it is not possible to replicate the complex real world driving environment using a simulator. We found there are limitations in using simulation technology for training novice and learner drivers, such as the acquisition of vehicle handling skills such as steering and braking. We have also found evidence of safety risks when using driving simulators to train novice and learner drivers, such as over-confidence and learning of incorrect skills (eg not looking in the rearview mirror enough).
We acknowledge that driver simulation technology is increasingly being introduced in New Zealand. We also know that training providers use the technology for specific circumstances, such as helping anxious drivers and assessment prior to driving on the road. We recommend that trainers using driver simulation technology are aware of the limitations and understand that there is no substitute for on-road training.
