Published: | Category: Environment , Planning, design, funding, building, maintenance of the transport network , Policy | Audiences: Road traffic engineers & consultants, Roading contractors

Huia Kaimanawa – Heritage Policy for Land Transport Infrastructure sets out the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi objectives to support sustainable work on transport infrastructure that appropriately manages risks to heritage, and conserves and celebrates these places.

This policy is a requirement for infrastructure planning, design, delivery, maintenance and operation activities where we are the principal entity or partner responsible for the activity.

Approved organisations are encouraged to implement these policy requirements for activities that are funded by the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF).

About the name

The policy's te reo name – Huia Kaimanawa – was gifted by Te Mātangi, our Māori Partnerships team. Huia kaimanawa is a figurative expression for anything prized. This name captures our aspirations and commitment to protect, conserve and celebrate the numerous heritage places throughout Aotearoa, which are considered as a taonga for us and future generations. The name acknowledges the layers of history throughout the country and encourages us to draw inspiration from the past to face the challenges ahead.
