Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has the authority to approve an alternative means of recording matters (also known as electronic driver logbooks) relevant to monitoring work time. It is a requirement for a commercial driver to record their work time hours.
Logbooks provide a record of matters relevant to the monitoring of work time and rest time a driver has accumulated during a cumulative work period.
Traditionally logbooks have been paper based and require drivers to make handwritten entries however Waka Kotahi now considers alternatives to paper logbooks and has introduced a application process for those persons wishing to develop an electronic logbook using the minimum specifications that can be found in the legislation.
Waka Kotahi has approved certain electronic logbooks - the list can be found here:
Note that these electronic logbooks should not be confused with GPS Logbooks currently available on the market which are designed to different specifications and standards.
As of April 2020, should you wish to express interest or submit an application to apply for approval of an electronic logbook contact driverandoperator@nzta.govt.nz for further information.
