The Pito-One to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua is opening on Monday 16 October 2023. So whether you’re planning to use the cycleway on your commute or just casually, take some time to familiarise yourself with how it links with existing and future routes and how you will transition through certain areas of work.
Information about Pito-One to Melling section project
Getting on/off from Melling
Heading north
As you exit the underpass at Bridge Street, you will be able to continue cycling on the shared pathway along Parliament Street as you head towards the Normandale Road Bridge. From there, you can continue along the shared pathway which crosses Pharazyn Street and cuts through The Greenaway towards Bridge Street. You will then be able to join the existing Hutt River Trail. Pedestrians can also access the Normandale Road Bridge from the shared pathway at Parliament Street.
Heading south
At Bridge Street, you will be able to join the Pito-One to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua via a shared pathway through The Greenaway. As you head towards the Normandale Road Bridge, you will need to cross Pharazyn Street and continue along the shared pathway that connects to Parliament Street. There you will turn left and continue on towards the first underpass at Bridge Street. This is where the cycleway begins.
Remember: Most of Pito-One to Melling is a cycleway. A portion at each end is a shared pathway. Keep left when using the route and be courteous to other users.

Using the bypass at Dowse Interchange
If you are heading south along State Highway 2, you will be able to use the Dowse Interchange bypass and join the Pito-One to Melling cycleway. Cyclists will have the option to exit back onto State Highway 2 after the interchange or continue cycling along the cycleway. You may also exit onto State Highway 2 if you are heading south along the cycleway. Please ensure that you check it’s safe to merge at all times.
Southbound cyclists from Dowse Drive or Hutt Road can join cycleway using the southern entry point at the end of the State Highway 2 onramp. Cyclists heading south on State Highway 2 will join at the northern entry point.
PLEASE NOTE: Those heading north will be encouraged to exit at Petone and travel along Hutt Road to Dowse Drive. It is possible for northbound cyclists to use the cycle bypass however, you will need to safely double back using the northern entry point and head up the State Highway 2 offramp and on to Dowse Drive.

Using the shared path at Petone train station
There will be a well-marked route through the Petone train station car park but it’s important to remember that this section is a shared pathway.
Heading north
As you exit the southern underpass adjacent to the Te Pukenga construction campus, the shared path will take you alongside the McKenzie Avenue bridge and into the station car park. The shared path continues up and over the rear of the platform next to the car park to the north of the station. Please keep left when using the route and be courteous to other users.
The cycleway begins at the end of the station car park.
Heading south
As you approach the Petone train station car park, the cycleway transitions into being a shared pathway, taking the user up and over the rear of the platform next to the car park. The shared pathway continues past the McKenzie Avenue bridge and down onto the southern underpass adjacent to the Te Pukenga construction campus
Remember: Most of Pito-One to Melling is a cycleway, however a portion at each end is a shared pathway. It's important to understand that the Petone section will be used by commuters using the Petone Park & Ride throughout the day as well as cycleway users. Getting on/off from Petone
Heading north
Take the State Highway 2 Pito-One off ramp. Before the roundabout, you will have the opportunity to merge onto the shared pathway. As you head north, you will then join the Pito-One to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua as you enter the first underpass towards Petone train station. Remember this is a shared pathway until just after the train station. If you do not want to use the Pito-One to Melling route, you can continue north on the Hutt Road or alternatively State Highway 2.

Heading south
As you exit the underpass from Petone train station you will join the existing shared pathway on the Hutt Road. If you’re cycling and wish to continue south towards Wellington, you will need to rejoin State Highway 2. To do this, you will need to go under the State Highway 2 Pito-One on/off ramps and use the path that wraps around and back up onto the on ramp. You will then be able to continue cycling towards Wellington. If you aren’t heading to Wellington, you can use the existing shared pathways or road network to get to Petone and the foreshore.
