This project will make State Highway 1 between Mosgiel and Balclutha safer for everyone. Possible safety improvements could include flexible safety barriers along the roadside, better road markings and signage.
The speed limit on the Northern Gateway Toll Road has been increased to 110km/h. On Tuesday 1 July 2025 the speed limit on Auckland’s State Highway 1 (SH1) Ara Tūhono - Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway will also increase to 110km/h.
Safety improvements on State Highway 1 (SH1) from the new Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway to Ohau include stretches of edge and median barriers, wider centrelines and turnarounds. Plus, we’ve changed the speed limits from south of Manakau to north of Ohau.
Two projects have made State Highway 1 between Piarere and Taupō safer and more efficient for everyone. And there are plans to do more when funding is available.
Work to repair the slow vehicle lane on State Highway 1 at the Picton Elevation to stop future ground movement and build resilience is largely complete with all three lanes open. A temporary speed limit of 70km/h will be in place until chipseal can be applied when the weather is warmer.
Plans for transport improvements through Rolleston will result in better connections for people and businesses in the area. Travel times through and around Rolleston will be more reliable, making it easier for people to get around and do business.
The Tar Barrel tunnel bypass project is a rail realignment, led by Kiwirail, to the east of the existing rail tunnel south of Ward. State Highway 1 will be reinstated over the new tunnel on the existing alignment.
There are several projects on State Highway 1 in and around the Taupō area to improve the state highway network.
NZTA are investigating infrastructure changes aimed at improving safety on SH1 between Taupō Airport and Hātepe.
These speed limits were set on State Highway 1 (SH1) from Templeton to Dawsons Road, just south of Christchurch, in 2021. In 2025, NZTA is consulting again to see if people support keeping the current 80km/h speed limit, rather than see it reverse to 100km/h.
