The Tauriko Enabling Works will improve safety at intersections of SH29 with Redwood Lane, Belk Road and Cambridge Road, enable housing development within Tauriko West, support further development of Tauriko Business Estate, protect freight routes and improve access to public transport.

A major slip in April 2017 left SH3 through the Manawatū Gorge impassable. A new road has been built over the Ruahine Range, to provide a safe, resilient, and efficient route between Woodville and Ashhurst. The new highway opened to traffic on 11 June 2025.
In 2017, the section of State Highway 3 through Te Āpiti – Manawatū Gorge was closed following a series of massive slips. This project is investigating the future of the old road.

Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway is one of the 3 Roads of National Significance (RoNS) that make up the Northland Corridor, a 100-kilometre strategic route connecting Auckland to Whangārei. This section is the longest of the corridor, a 45km stretch, which includes the Brynderwyn Hills alternative.
