The challenge

New Zealand's road transport sector faces a critical shortage of skilled practitioners and lacks a consistent understanding of what 'good' looks like, which has contributed to:

  • constrained asset management practices and innovation
  • inconsistent transport outcomes with limited effectiveness measures
  • skilled practitioners stretched beyond their capabilities
  • organisations struggling to maintain expertise.

The solution

The REG Competency Project is delivering a comprehensive framework and assessment that:

  • creates a common definition of what ‘good’ looks like for activities and roles, from planning through to delivery
  • aligns with global standards (ISO 55001:2024 and the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management Landscape: 2024)
  • measures individual skills and experience against core competency areas
  • identifies development needs and opportunities.

Sector-wide benefits

This initiative will:

  • provide data-driven insights on sector capability
  • enable knowledge transfer to the next generation
  • enable clear development pathways to attract and retain talent
  • support better infrastructure management and outcomes for all New Zealanders.

Get involved

Support this initiative by:

  • participating in industry workshops
  • joining assessment pilot testing
