The challenge
New Zealand's road transport sector faces a critical shortage of skilled practitioners and lacks a consistent understanding of what 'good' looks like, which has contributed to:
- constrained asset management practices and innovation
- inconsistent transport outcomes with limited effectiveness measures
- skilled practitioners stretched beyond their capabilities
- organisations struggling to maintain expertise.
The solution
The REG Competency Project is delivering a comprehensive framework and assessment that:
- creates a common definition of what ‘good’ looks like for activities and roles, from planning through to delivery
- aligns with global standards (ISO 55001:2024 and the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management Landscape: 2024)
- measures individual skills and experience against core competency areas
- identifies development needs and opportunities.
Sector-wide benefits
This initiative will:
- provide data-driven insights on sector capability
- enable knowledge transfer to the next generation
- enable clear development pathways to attract and retain talent
- support better infrastructure management and outcomes for all New Zealanders.
