State Highway 25 between the townships of Kuaotunu and Whitianga has now reopened, after multiple slips along the stretch of road following Friday’s heavy rain.
As the heavy rain has continued today around Hawke’s Bay, we’re urging road users to expect the unexpected – the possibility for more silt, debris and slips.
After unprecedented rain fell in Mangawhai overnight, our crews have been out at first light to assess the damage. Our priority remains opening the roads safely and quickly.
Due to a slip near the intersection of State Highway 1 (SH1) and Otioro Road, Topuni and multiple local road closures through Mangawhai, there is currently no access between Northland and Auckland regions.
State Highway 50 has now reopened, restoring another key connection for Hawke's Bay communities following the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle last week.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises that while a solution is still being worked on, it will be around nine to 12 months before State Highway 25A is fully re-opened in the Coromandel.
As the response to the widespread impact of Cyclone Gabrielle continues, road renewals and project activity has been able to re-commence, in part thanks to a run of warm sunny weather gracing the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region.

Drivers are advised to delay their journeys from Waipara or the West Coast/ Nelson through the Lewis Pass this morning following a serious crash south of the turnoff to Hanmer Springs. The Police Serious Crash Unit is attending.
