The rain event over the past week has had a significant impact on accessibility across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region, particular over Anniversary weekend.

Works as part of the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth project will require overnight closures on State Highway 1 (SH1) between Silverdale and north of the Johnstones Hill tunnels (northbound) and Pūhoi and Grand Drive (southbound) over five weeks.

State Highway 23 is still open to one lane this morning, however Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises road users should be prepared that the highway may need to fully close at short notice.
We are continuing to urge all road users to avoid non-essential travel in the upper North Island if they can, following red and orange warnings issued by Metservice.
