Last week’s two-day closure of the Desert Road section of State Highway 1 proved fortunate timing, with fine weather allowing a significant amount of work to be completed.
From Wednesday 10 August traffic travelling on SH3 will be switched to run on the northbound lane 400 metres from the Princess Street intersection at Waitara, in order to allow crews to install a new stormwater pipe under the road as part of the Te Ara Tūtohu: SH3 Waitara to Bell Block safety improvement project.
Road crews have managed to clear treefalls, slips, and debris that had forced the closure of this road overnight and today. This involved significant effort as not only did fallen trees have to be removed but so too did those at risk of falling onto the road.
The route between Blenheim and Nelson remains closed today. Contractors are working to clear slips and tree falls on Whangamoa Hill. Atrocious weather conditions meant it was unsafe to do this work overnight.
Bad weather has brought down trees and caused rockfalls on the Whangamoa Hill. It means State Highway 6 will be closed between Rai Valley and Hira overnight.
Work will get underway next week on the construction of a new slow vehicle bay on State Highway 2, as part of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency's work to provide more passing opportunities between Napier and Wairoa.
