Oamaru's Severn Street is getting a facelift from next Monday (27 January) with new kerb, channels and road resurface at a cost of $430,000.
The NZ Transport Agency's Otago/Southland Highway Manager Ian Duncan says State Highway 1 (Severn Street), between Lune Street and Itchen Street, has developed into a rough ride with potholes, ruts and road surface cracking.
"The new road surface laid in 2010 has proven unsuitable for this section of the highway, resulting in higher than usual maintenance.
"The work that gets underway on Monday will see the installation of new kerb and channel, replacement of the road surface on the uphill section of this stretch of the highway and two coats of new seal."
He says the work will take five weeks to complete, during which time road users are advised there will be delays, as well as access restrictions and closures at the intersection of Severn Street with Lune Street, Itchen Street and Douglas Terrace.
The work will be completed in late February/early March. It is expected to provide improved and safer driving conditions, as well as a reduction of road noise for adjacent residents.
