As the upgrade of the State Highway 1/14/Maunu Road intersection in Whangarei nears completion, the NZ Transport Agency is shifting focus to the next stage of the city’s highway improvements - upgrading SH1 through Selwyn Avenue.
Contractors will start the first stage of the Selwyn Avenue works next Monday (24 March) – installing new traffic signals - to complete the upgrade of SH1 between Western Hills Drive through to the Caltex Service Station, and from the Rust Avenue Bridge to 5th Avenue on Selwyn Avenue.
“We’re excited to start another of the improvement projects in Whangarei – it means we can deliver on what we’ve promised and provide the community safer and easier access through the city,” says the Transport Agency’s Highways Manager Tommy Parker.
The work includes widening the existing highway, construction of new footpaths, and the installation of new utilities. The project is split into three stages:
The works are due to be completed in September. Mr Parker says no night works are planned at this stage.
The Transport Agency, along with Whangarei District Council, plans an open day in April for the community to keep people informed about the SH1 improvements.
Date: Wednesday 2 April
Time: 10-12pm and 2-7pm
Location: Toll Stadium, Okara Park Drive Whangarei
“The support our projects get from the people of Whangarei is great, and it is an important part of being able to deliver those works successfully,” Mr Parker says.
The Transport Agency is working with WDC to improve the state highway. In all, there are five projects planned to help manage growing traffic numbers, improve safety and make travel easier for locals and visitors travelling in and around Whangarei. The improvements also include improved safety for people who walk and cycle.
The remaining three projects are Tarewa Road, Wilson Avenue to Fourth Avenue and Kensington Avenue to Manse Street.
