Motorists travelling southbound on State Highway 1 through Whangarei this Saturday (21 March) will be detoured along local streets to allow for the installation of a new storm water culvert across the highway.

The installation is part of the improvement works being undertaken on SH1 from Wilson Avenue to Fourth Avenue to provide the community with safer and easier access through the city.
Southbound traffic on the state highway between Central Avenue and Fourth Avenue will be detoured via Central Avenue and Maunu Road.
The Transport Agency’s Acting Auckland and Northland Highway Manager Mieszko Iwaskow says the Agency apologised in advance for any inconvenience and thanked motorists for their continued patience while this final phase of work is completed.
“The detour will add a couple of minutes to journey times, although it could be longer, depending on traffic volumes. We advise motorists to allow extra time for their journey.”
Residents travelling on SH1 south and wanting to access their property during this time can do so via Central Avenue/Maunu Road and SH1 northbound.
