Wellington drivers are urged to take extra care on the roads as heavy rain leaves its mark on the region’s state highways.
The Metservice has a heavy rain warning for northern Wellington, the Kapiti Coast and the Hutt Valley.
Mark Owen, Regional Manager Wellington/Top of the South, says the rain has seen flooding this morning on State Highway 2 through the Hutt Valley and on State Highway 1 in Wellington’s CNBD near the Basin Reserve.
“There has also been a southbound lane closure on State Highway 59 near the Mungavin interchange due to a fallen tree and reports of minor slips and rockfalls on other parts of the local state highway network.”
Mr Owen says the bad weather means drivers must be on the ball and prepared for hazardous driving conditions.
“Drive to the conditions. If visibility is bad, make sure your headlights are on so that other drivers can see you. Watch your following distances and expect the unexpected. Remember, it is better to arrive late than to not arrive at all.”
Contractors are working hard to keep roads open, but drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.
