With heavy rain expected to hit the Marlborough region on Sunday, Waka Kotahi wants drivers to be ready for wet weather driving.
Update 18 June:
With the Metservice now extending its heavy rain watch to cover Wairarapa and the Tararua Districts, lower North Island drivers also need to take extra care on the roads.
A heavy rain watch is in place for the regions until 9 pm tomorrow night (Monday, 19 June). It will affect State Highway 2, State Highway 53, and State Highway 3.
Motorists must drive to the conditions and be prepared for wet weather driving and road hazards – such as localised flooding, slips, tree and rock falls. Please watch your speed and following distances.
17 June:
The Metservice has issued a heavy rain watch for eastern Marlborough, south of Ward, with heavy rain forecast between 4am Sunday and 4am Monday.
This will affect drivers on State Highway 1 from Ward to south of Kaikoura.
Motorists are asked to drive to the conditions, watch their following distances, and make sure they use their headlights when visibility is poor. Drive safe, be seen, be ready for road hazards, allow for extra travel time, and make sure you get to your destination safely.
Bad weather can see state highways closed at short notice. Drivers are encouraged to check road and weather conditions before they travel. This is particularly important for drivers with bookings on the Picton ferries.
