The NZ Transport has extended the closure of SH6 from Woodstock Rimu Road near Hokitika in the north, to south of Fox Glacier, due to further slips on the Fox Hills between Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, and extensive flooding across 5km of SH6 at Evans Straight north of the Whanganui River.
Contractors are monitoring the situation closely – the road will remain closed until further notice.
Surface flooding remains a problem along other sections of the West Coast, and drivers are urged to take extra care.
SH73 Arthurs Pass to Otira is also being affected by surface flooding and strong winds. Extra care especially for caravans, motorcycles or high-sided vehicles.
