Contractors have managed to complete safety improvement works on State Highway 58 ahead of schedule.
The works closure is over and the highway is now open to traffic between Lower Hutt and Pāuatahanui.

Congestion has eased, and traffic is now moving normally on State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 in and out of Wellington.
However, the State Highway 58 roadworks closure continues until 4 am Monday. This means more congestion and travel delays are likely on Sunday.
Drivers must plan for this and allow extra time for their journeys.

Wellington drivers can expect delays of up to 45 minutes at the following areas of State Highway 1 and State Highway 2:
Drivers travelling between the Hutt Valley and Porurua are reminded State Highway 58 remains closed between Haywards Hill and Pāuatahanui tonight and tomorrow, with access restricted to residents only.
Non-residents must avoid this route.

Traffic congestion and journey delays on Wellington highways are continuing this afternoon.
Drivers using State Highway 2 between Wellington and Lower Hutt can now expect delays of up to 45 minutes.
Road users should plan for longer travel times and take extra care in queued traffic.

Traffic congestion is also affecting State Highway 1 – Tawa to Ngauranga.
Travel delays of up to 30 minutes can be expected and drivers should factor this into their travel plans.
Increased traffic volumes on both State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 are expected this weekend because of the road works closure of State Highway 58.
Drivers are reminded access on State Highway 58 between the Hutt Valley and Pāuatahanui is for residents only.

Due to heavy traffic volumes, drivers can expect delays on State Highway 2.
There is significant congestion between Petone and Ngauranga.
Drivers travelling between Wellington and the Hutt Valley can expect delays of up to 30 minutes and should plane their trips accordingly.

State Highway 58 will be closed for safety improvement works between Friday 28 April and Monday 1 May, unless postponed by bad weather.
With the planned closure of State Highway 58 now just a week away, Wellington drivers must be ready for the impact it will have on local highways and travel times.
State Highway 58 will be closed for safety improvement works between Friday, 28 April and Monday, 1 May, unless postponed by bad weather. The highway will be closed from 8:00 pm on Friday to 4:00 am on Monday.
The closure will allow work to be completed on the State Highway 58 Safety Improvements project between Moonshine Road and Mount Cecil Road. Contractors are reconstructing a section of the highway to prepare the road for new median and side safety barriers.
People travelling between the Hutt Valley and Porirua/Kāpiti must use State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 via Ngauranga instead. This means more vehicles will be using these highways and a greater chance of traffic congestion and travel delays.
Drivers must plan for this and expect delays when travelling between Wellington/Hutt Valley and the Kāpiti Coast. People should avoid journeys where possible, use public transport, or allow extra time for their travel.

There will be local access to properties and businesses outside the works area from either end of State Highway 58. Residents inside the full closure work area, and emergency services, will have access as required.
Dry weather is required for the work to be completed successfully. If wet weather is forecast, the closure will be postponed to the weekend beginning Friday, 5 May or the weekend beginning Friday, 12 May.
