Wellington drivers, be ready for strong winds

|

Update 3:50pm: The Metservice has upgraded its weather warnings for the lower North Island.

A strong wind warning is now in place for Wellington and  a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Carterton, Tararua, Masterton, Upper Hutt City and South Wairarapa.

Drivers travelling in these areas, particularly on State Highway 2 through Wairarapa, must be prepared for the bad weather and expect road hazards. Strong winds can bring down trees and bring other debris onto roads.

Please watch your speed and following distances and avoid sudden braking if roads are wet. Switch your headlights on if visibility is poor.

12pm

Wellington and Wairarapa drivers are asked to take extra care on the region’s roads this afternoon with Strong Wind Watch in force for the region.

The Metservice has issued the watch for late this afternoon and into this evening and warns southerly winds may approach severe gales in exposed areas.

A similar warning is in place for the Kaikoura coast to southern Marlborough this afternoon.

The bad weather will coincide with afternoon commuter traffic for lower North Island drivers. It will affect exposed routes such as State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.

Truck and van drivers, light vehicles, towing vehicles, and motorcyclists must take extra care and drive to the conditions.

Road users are encouraged to check weather and road conditions before travelling.
